PLANNING THE PHOTOSHOOT
On one summer afternoon, we met with young mom Halee who wanted to have a unique and unforgettable first birthday photography session for her son. She flew in from out of state to do the photoshoot with our studio. Mon was very excited and full of creative and fun ideas to make her son Kiernan’s pictures in the Little Fisherman theme.
I supported her thematic insights since I’m very familiar with fishing from my childhood years. Together with Kiernan’s mom, we decided on all the little details of the first birthday photography session. We discussed topics such as the right outfits, props ideas, and photoshoot locations.
Next, we worked out the photoshoot time based on the child’s feeding/napping/playing schedule. The ideal timing fell on sunset – the best time for outdoor photoshoots! Sunset is the time when the sun produces beautiful warm light and creates a background full of the warm palette of colors.

HOW WE CHOSE THE TODDLER’S PHOTOSHOOT LOCATION
For this specific Sacramento children photography session, we chose Dry Creek Community Park. This beautiful tranquil creekside spot, conveniently located in the Roseville area on the border of the Antelope area.
The Dry Creek Community Park is voted one of the best photography locations and best trail locations in the Sacramento area. The park has paved bike/walking trails, which make it easier to access different parts of this beautiful park and creek.
It wasn’t hard for mom, carrying child outfits and props and the photographer with his equipment, to access any part of the park. When hunting for the best children photography location, we took a little dirt trail that took us to a shallow creek.
It was the ideal photography location for the first birthday photos. Small sandy shore, big trees with the sun setting light splashing through its branches – gave a sense of a secluded nature-made photo studio.
THE PHOTOSHOOT TIME
Not wasting any time, I started setting up, wanting to capture the most precious moments between the mother and her son. Their bond was wonderfully glorious – the purest love.
I reflected in photos what I witnessed in person: mom’s pure joy watching her child joyfully hopping over rocks and splashing in water touched by sun rays. Kiernan’s blue eyes were telling a story of pure unconditional love for his mom and a curiosity about what happens next.
