Family pictures at Folsom Lake are inquired about more and more often lately. Many families with children prefer this location as it offers a lot of space for their littles to run around. It’s easier to take family pictures in a natural and relaxed setting.
The Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is our client favorite too. Frequently families choose this location for their kids’ pictures or family photography needs. I can’t blame them for this, as this beautiful park offers a wide variety of gorgeous backdrops all year round!

FOLSOM LAKE SRA LOCATION
The Folsom Lake is a reservoir on the American River in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California, United States, and is located within Placer, El Dorado Hills, and Sacramento counties. Folsom Lake and the surrounding Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is one of the most visited parks in the California Park system.
Folsom Lake State Recreation Area borders with Folsom, Granite Bay, and El Dorado Hills areas and is located a little over 20 miles away from Downtown Sacramento. We’ve had numerous personal family and children portrait photo sessions taken there of our own family, and each time we were left with beautiful family portraits and amazing memories.
This park offers many amenities such as hiking, bike riding, horseback riding, boating, and fishing. Countless beautiful trails surround this park, open fields with wildflowers bloom the whole spring – this is what makes this location most desirable for our families and seniors.
ABOUT THE SESSION
When Popescu family contacted Bidun Studio Photography, we invited them in for a consultation in our Sacramento studio. Having an in-person consultation with the prospective family is so crucial in getting to know the client on a personal level. It helps us to provide each family with much better photography experience.
After finding out more about Popescu family members and their vision for family portrait photography, we both felt that we are an excellent fit for each other. We couldn’t wait to start preparing for their photo session.
PREPARATION TIME
We set out on planning the family photo session mission. We discussed which outfits work best for summer family portraits, and where they can get ideas for their photoshoot outfits and accessories.
Next, we started looking into different locations for their Sacramento family photography session. After looking through numerous family photography galleries on my webpage, they decided on getting their family portraits taken at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.
PHOTO SESSION DAY
On the day of the family photo session, we had beautiful warm weather, which is very predictable for California late-summer & early-fall time. The Popescu family were very excited about their family portrait photography session and were super easy to work with. They prepared well with color coordinating outfits that worked well for the given location.
ACCESS POINTS AT FOLSOM LAKE SRA
There are five major day-use areas on the Folsom Lake: Granite Bay, Beales Point, Folsom Point, Negro Bar, and Nimbus Flats. Out of all these areas, I love to take my portrait photography clients to the Granite Bay area of the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.
Having photographed so many family portraits and senior portraits at this location, I have some favorite spots where the lighting is just perfect at the sunset time. I recommend you to see our post on Natural Light Photography and ideas for better portraits.
DOTONS POINT LOCATION
One of my all-time favorite family photography spots is the Dotons Point. It’s a very convenient location for any size of family, with a good number of parking spaces, nearby bathrooms, and of course beautiful backdrops for family pictures.
If our portrait clients prefer greenery and woodsy backdrops, we will guide them towards those areas. For families who want beach and waterscape backdrops – we can do that too. Even for families who wish to have more rocky backdrops – the Dotons Point location provides options for that as well.
PHOTOS AT THE BEACH
With the Popescu family, we started taking sunset family portraits at the Dotons Point. The tall golden grass and mighty old Oak trees highlighted with the golden light. The soft lighting from the setting sun made these portraits personable and timeless.
As this location offers direct access to the lake, we walked closer to the water for some more pictures. The piles of rocks on the beach served as a great spot to position the family for unique photos with the Folsom Lake on the background.
BEEKS BIGHT SPOT
Soon we drove over to Beeks Bight parking lot, stopping at some beautiful spots along the way. One of my recent favorite spots is the winding way, where we would take a photo to show the road in the back as a unique backdrop.
The family, the location, and that sunset light! Everything worked so well during this Folsom family photography session. Mom, dad, and their two children felt at ease in front of the camera, and we shared so many laughs throughout their photo session.
